Lady Gaga Says Fans ‘Changed My Life’ In MTV Special

The pop superstar describes her Little Monsters as ‘a giant disco ball’ in ‘Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside,’ airing tonight on MTV.

Lady Gaga is perhaps a bigger fan of her fans than they are of her. She never passes up a chance to thank her Little Monsters for helping her go from scrappy New York performer to legitimate pop superstar. That appreciation is expressed in the MTV documentary “Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside,” airing tonight at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

During the hour-long, exclusive chat, Gaga goes into great detail about her life in New York, her rise to fame, her love for her family and how she began to grow a fanbase on the Lower East Side of New York City thanks to her outlandish stage persona and the way people connected to it. While she’s performing to bigger crowds these days, she remains grounded and her gratitude to the people who have bought her records and tickets to her shows seems undying.

“The biggest surprise to me has been my relationship with my fans,” she explains in the special. “They’ve changed my life. The fans are the thing that you can’t learn; they were the instrument in the music that nobody taught me about.”

Mother Monster likens her fans to one of the key parts of her aesthetic. “They’re a giant disco ball — thousands of tiny little mirrors,” she says. “The commercial success that I’ve had has been mind-blowing. I’m the girl that everyone said ‘no’ and shook their head and said, ‘I don’t get it.’ ”

Well, her fans got it and that love goes both ways. Earlier this week, MTV News caught up with some of Gaga’s Little Monsters at a Born This Way album signing and they sang her praises as well. “Being a Little Monster is about letting out your inner freak,” Jen Finnegan, an aspiring musician, explained to us about Gaga’s influence. “[It's letting out] everything that you are and everything that you want to be through Lady Gaga and her music.”

Don’t miss “Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside” to hear Mother Monster herself open up about the creative forces behind her generation-defining career. Our exclusive documentary airs Thursday, May 26, at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, followed by a live stream on MTV.com hosted by MTV News’ James Montgomery and featuring special guests Lady Starlight, Justin Tranter from Semi Precious Weapons, documentary director Davi Russo, producer Fernando Garibay and Gaga’s biggest Little Monsters.

‘American Idol’ Finale Reportedly To Feature Lady Gaga, Beyonce Performance

As “American Idol” fans sweat out the final hours before they find out whether Scotty McCreery or Lauren Alaina will be crowned the new people’s champ, more details have emerged about who will perform on the season 10 finale on Wednesday night (May 25).

As always, producers have kept a tight lid on what surprises are in store for the two-hour finale — and a spokesperson for “Idol” did not return requests for comment at press time. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, a pair of this year’s mentors will be back to celebrate the coronation.

Citing unnamed production sources, the trade magazine reported that in addition to U2′s Bono and The Edge performing with castmembers from the troubled Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” Beyoncé and Lady Gaga will take the stage.

The story claimed that both pop divas, who helped mentor this year’s finalists, will team up with all-time “Idol” champ Carrie Underwood to perform a group medley with judge Steven Tyler and title contenders McCreery and Alaina. There is also unconfirmed talk that fellow judge Jennifer Lopez will also take the stage for a command performance.

In addition, bearded season 10 growler Casey Abrams will take the stage with “Kung Fu Panda 2″ funnyman Jack Black.

Don’t miss a special edition of “Idol Party Live” Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, finale red-carpet coverage and the last “Idol in 60 Seconds” of season 10. ‘X-Men: First Class’ Stars Talk ‘Humanizing’ The Mutants

‘You take all of the effects out of the movie, you still have the basis for an entertaining story,’ Kevin Bacon tells MTV News.

The summer movie season of 2011 is poised to be one full of superheroes. Things have already been kicked off by the mighty God of Thunder, “Thor,” but following quickly in his path are not one, but a whole pack of mutants-turned-superheroes in “X-Men: First Class.”

When MTV News caught up with two of the actors who make up the mutant-tastic movie, January Jones and Kevin Bacon, we asked them to explain what separates this latest “X-Men” film from the rest of the DC and Marvel-based movies slated to open in the coming months.

“To me, I think it’s the emotional content of the movie,” Bacon said. “There’s a lot of emphasis on humanizing these mutants. They’re falling in love, they’re having sex, they’re angry with each other, they’re getting drunk, they’re acting childish and grown-up and learning things,” he explained of the younger characters in the film. “You take all of the effects out of the movie, you still have the basis for an entertaining story.”

Speaking specifically about the look and feel of their characters, who are inspired by a rich and lengthy history, Jones, who plays telepath Emma Frost, revealed she was happy to jump into the world of comic books, even if it meant wearing a bikini for most of the film.

“I was aware [of the costume],” she said. “I read the comics, I did my research. I’m more dressed in the movie than she is in the comics,” she pointed out. “So I was actually quite relieved.”

With regard to Bacon’s character, the villainous Sebastian Shaw, we wondered if his nuanced performance might have been influenced by the evildoers in the James Bond franchise.

“No, I really didn’t [draw from any of those films],” he said. “This was the first that I’ve even thought about Bond, but it’s come up quite a bit. I love those movies,” he revealed. “I grew up with those movies. They were very, very influential on me as a kid. My son, when he was about 10, he became a huge fan. We went back and watched them all again. If something feels Bond-ian, it was subconscious.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “X-Men: First Class.”
